As one of the oldest charitable organizations in the world, the society of St Vincent de Paul is a Catholic lay organization of about 800,000 men and women throughout the world who voluntarily join together to grow spiritually and offer person to person service to the needy and suffering in 150 countries.
At the Basilica of St Adalbert/St James Church, we have a St. Vincent de Paul conference. The conference is the basic unit of the society where we meet twice a month. The purpose of the meetings is for fellowship, prayer, and to discuss how to help those who call us in need. From the society’s beginnings, the central most basic activity of the conference has been the visitation of the needy in their homes. The home visits are always done in pairs. This is to protect ourselves and the people we are visiting. This is the way Christ sent out his apostles, two by two.
The home visit is a very personal and real experience for both the Vincentian and the person being visited. We not only give them financial help if possible but we get to show them that we care enough about them to come and listen and even pray for them.
The motto of the society is, “No work of charity is foreign to the society”. Most of the help we provide is financial where people need help paying back rent to prevent evictions and to prevent utility shut offs. They usually find themselves in trouble after they have medical issues, domestic violence or other events. Our help provides them a lift to move past this and hopefully to move ahead. Other agencies are not able to help financially and it has been up to churches to help.
Most our funds come from parishioners. If you would like to donate you may do so using the Basilica website or sending a check made out to Basilica of St Adalbert St Vincent de Paul.
We are always in needs of more members to become involved in a conference.
